Deep Fried Pickles
A Tasty Southern Snack
Deep fried pickles are a southern treat thought to have originated in Atkins, Arkansas at the Duchess Drive In in the 1960's. They were created by a man named Bernell "Fatman" Austin. Although his exact recipe is known only to his family and used once a year at Picklefest in Atkins, many people have attempted to replicate his recipe. Other recipes may not be the original, but they are some very tasty copycats. This dish is excellent as an appetizer or as an side item.
This recipe is absolutely delicious! Try it with Aioli sauce. I will post that recipe shortly. Also good dipped in ranch dip. Enjoy!

Ingredients
- 2 cups vegetable or canola oil for frying, (I use my deep fryer which holds more)
- 1 12oz bottle beer, bud light is what I suggest
- 3 cups all purpose flour, divided evenly into two bowls or ziploc bags for dipping
- 1 tsp black pepper, course ground
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/2 tsp seasoning salt
- 1/2 16 oz jar dill pickle slices
- 1 cup worcheshire sauce
Directions
- Soak pickles in small bowl in a worcheshire sauce for about 15 minutes.
- Heat oil in the deep fryer to 375 degrees.
- Whisk together 1 1/2 cups of flour, spices, and beer in a medium size bowl. Dip the pickle slices into the beer batter.
- In another medium size bowl or a ziploc bag, place the other 1 1/2 cups of flour. Dip the pickles a second time in the flour.
- Fry pickles in the oil until golden brown and crunchy. Fry for approximately 5 minutes.
- Place on a platter or plate covered with 2-3 papertowels to drain the excess grease.
- Serve with Aioli dip or ranch dressing. Yummy!
