Apple Butter
Crock Pot Apple Butter
A Delicious Treat
Apple Butter is typically considered an American creation. The colonists in New England were thought to have created apple butter. It is also argued that the German immigrants and Pennsylvania Dutch brought over this recipe and it spread rapidly among other colonists, which made the origin of it difficult to truly trace. They referred to this dish as Cider boiled Applesauce. Colonists changed the name and claimed it as their own. This dish spread to Appalachia, were it became a staple and where it was called apple butter due to the way it spreads so easily and smoothly.
This is an easy and delicious recipe for apple butter. It is great on toast, biscuits, and apple fritters. My daughter even likes it as a substitute for jelly on peanut butter sandwiches.
